Yoe Chien Shen, Chinese Herbal Medication

Yoe Chien Shen (36), or Andi Sutrisno, is also often called Asing. He is one of the entrepreneurs focusing in Chinese herbal medication and the owner of ‘Jadi Waras’ drugstore. Together with his wife, Lenny Lianawati (36), the computer science graduate is continuing his father’s business, Budi Sutrisno, which was founded 34 years ago in 1979. His father began the business as a small sundries store, which then evolved to be an electrical store and lastly a drugstore. By 1995, Budi had decided to concentrate in the medical sector, particularly the Chinese ‘Sinshe’ method.

When Tamadun asked Asing about the reason for his father to start a drugstore, he said that his father thought it was his calling and that he was well-suited for the business. Moreover, his father Budi would also like to help the sick people by Chinese medicines, which are comparatively cheaper.
In 2000, his father called Asing, which was in Jakarta at that time to “come home and help our store”. He was not allowed to reject so Asing returned back home and tried to manage the store.

Budi had taught Asing on the knowledge of traditional pharmaceutical as part of the family’s tradition. By 2003, Jadi Waras drugstore management was fully trusted to Asing.

Before the takeover, Asing was prepared well by his father in many aspects: accompanying him in serving the patients, learning from the medical books, observing healing procedures, and memorizing the names and functions of medicines.

Drugstore Management

In managing the store, Asing and his wife have different roles and tasks. His wife is in charge of paying the salaries, checking the stocks and scheduling the order. While Asing will serve the patients and pay the bills when they are due.

Asing never feels much burden on the business operations side because the government supports them by easing many of the administrative processes. But, he feels burdened when there is a patient that suffers a heavy disease and expects his Chinese medicines to cure it, while his ability is limited. “Recovery belongs to God,” said Asing.

Generally, Asing applies three steps of healing process. First, he will diagnose the patient by the heart’s pulse and blood pressure. Second, he gives a therapy at certain points using stimulator that uses flow of electricity. Third, Asing will give suitable medicine depending on the level of severity of the disease.

Asing said that he ever cured a patient with an unusual disease whose tongue had turned black.

Every day, he serves more than 50 persons. With the help of his 14 staffs, his revenue can reach tens of millions each day. “It is not so ethical when I mention the amount,” said Asing.

Tamaddun was curious and asked about the secret for a person to be healthy every day. Asing took a deep breadth and shared his philosophy on this matter, “Everything in life must be in balance, not too much or too little. The most important is the balance of body, soul and spirit.”

First, the body needs exercises and healthy eating schedule. The soul needs to be grateful and sincere. While the spirit needs continuous prayer. Second, being overly happy or sad is not good. Third, be grateful and sincere all the time. The three have to be in balance and so this philosophy should be understood by everyone.
